Artists Statement

As a trained Art Therapist, I subscribe to the healing characteristics of art and how art practice can give voice and clarity to contemporary issues.

With the intrusion of the twenty-four-hour news cycle and social media in people’s lives, my art practice is increasingly informed by local and world events around the environment, politics and women’s issues, where there is a sense that reports being widely distributed are fluid, chancy, uncertain and lack balance.

My response at times is to create bright, loud, and unapologetic patchworks of protests with decoded letters that reveal a declaration to confront current events and address pertinent political issues that are seen and heard.

Colour is very important to me. I use colour combinations to attract the viewers eye to each piece. It is only after the viewer deciphers the text that they realise there is darker under layer to the work.

In contrast to the colourful protest works, I often return to quiet, monochromatic works to debrief from the surrounding chaos of everyday life.
